I developed an interest in letterpress after walking into Hatch Show Print in Nashville, TN, and Skylab Letterpress and Hammerpress in Kansas City. I learned the letterpress process from Bob Atkins of Skylab Letterpress through JCCC. His mentorship laid the foundation for my process. My objective is to produce visually engaging printed and collage pieces that resonate and engage. Working with a 1939 Vandercook proof press and a 50’s Line-O’Scribe sign machine using wood and metal type, I explore typographic form through layered prints and experimentation. This hands-on process challenges how I think about composition, restraint, and intention, and influence my approach to traditional design projects. Because the pieces are physically arranged by hand, each print involves experimentation. The result is art that carries the texture, history, and character of the original materials, making every print unique.
